The Sunshine Summary is a wrap-up of the college football games played by the FBS universities in the state of Florida
The FBS programs in Florida were all over the place…again. A couple of home losses are the biggest stories in the state this week. See how the Sunshine State was represented…
Florida Atlantic University (2-1)
Opponent: SE Louisiana
Location: FAU Stadium, Boca Raton, Fl
Date/Time: Saturday 9/10 @ 6pm
Final Score: 42-9 FAU
This game can be summed up with one stat – 385 yards. That’s how many more yards FAU racked up compared to SE Louisiana. Many teams across the country didn’t collect that much yardage so it’s quite a feat to outgain an opponent by that much. In total, FAU went for 631 total yards in a dominant performance. Kudos to them for shaking off last weeks loss, locking in to handle business against an inferior opponent, and getting a comfortable win.
Florida International University (1-1)
Opponent: Texas St
Location: Bobcat Stadium, San Marcos, Fl
Date/Time: Saturday 9/10 @ 7pm
Final Score: 41-12 Texas St
Run the ball efficiently. Hit on explosive plays. The vast majority of college coaches would agree that if their team did those two things on any given Saturday, they would expect to win. Unfortunately for FIU, they were on the receiving end of this type of game. Texas St outran the Panthers 226 yards to 62. That coupled with two explosive touchdowns of 50+ yards had the cats rolling over.
Florida State University (2-0)

University of Central Florida (1-1)
Opponent: Louisville
Location: Bounce House, Orlando, FL
Date/Time: Friday 9/9 @ 7pm
Final Score: 20-14
College is so exciting in part because you can see wild swings in performance from week to week. Last week John Rhys Plumless and UCF could do no wrong. Meanwhile, Malik Cunningham and Louisville got COOKED by Syracuse. You wouldn’t know that by looking at how they played each other under the Friday Night Lights. JRP did not have his best showing – being much less than sharp with his decision making that only resulted in one interception but multiple failed opportunities to get points. Conversely, Malik Cunningham willed his team in critical moments during the game which culminated in a road win for the Cardinals. JRP will have need to be better and his offensive line performing better will make that easier. The Knights will mostly face lesser competition but there are other big games coming where they will be able to show progress.
University of Florida #18 (1-1)
Opponent: #20 Kentucky
Location: Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, Gainesville, FL
Date/Time: Saturday 9/10 @ 7pm
Final Score: 26-16 UK
Have you ever been in a dark room when someone comes in and turns the lights on? The immediate brightness is briefly blinding and you’re debilitated for a quick moment. It felt like that’s what happened to young Anthony Richardson. Last weeks heroic performance against Utah had him in CFBs limelight, getting copious amounts of shine. His team propelled from unranked to #12 in the nation and the hype was roaring. Fast forward to this week and he was seemingly blinded by all the brightness. Kentucky was committed to not letting him beat him with his legs – taking away his most lethal threat. When forced to make contested throws far too many of his passes ended incomplete. Learning how to deal with success is a challenge often ignored but certainly one AR and the Gators will have to learn. Also, I’m still waiting to see who will emerge as the other playmaker on this team because if no one does it’s going to be tough sledding for this offense as they traverse conference play.
University of Miami #13 (2-0)
Opponent: Southern Miss
Location: Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, FL
Date/Time: Saturday 9/10 @ Noon
Final Score: 30-7
The final score is a respectable final but Miami, at times, was less than that in this game. At the half Miami held just a 10-7 lead after only getting points on 2 of their 5 possessions. Tyler Van Dyke and the offense was…clunky. The highly regarded QB was unable to get into a rhythm, threw an interception and saw his offensive line unable to hold up against the USM defensive line. They did come out in the 2nd half looking very motivated and played to a higher standard. The field was completely titled in the Canes favor through in the 3rd quarter as the defense was dominant and the offense was crisp. This could’ve been seen as a “trap game” for Miami but they passed the test and can now set their sights on a major trip to College Station to take on Texas A&M who fell victim to the trap.
University of South Florida (1-1)
Opponent: Howard
Location: Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, FL
Date/Time: Saturday 9/10 @ 7pm
Final Score: 42-20
Six rushing touchdowns. Six. I don’t care who’s playing whom, if you can score six tuddies on the ground you have the highest of chances to win the game. Jeff Scott needed a win in the WORST way and he got one. That’s the good news. The bad news – he won’t get many more this easily. In fact, this performance wasn’t overly impressive as the Bulls still gave up 418 total yards and gave up more first downs than they could secure to a bad Howard team. The run game found painter but Howard won the Time of Possession battle and scored more points today than they did against FCS opponent Alabama St. When you win but are unable to quell “hot seat” conversations means you let much to be desired. Let’s see if Jeff Scott can use this win as a springboard to better showings on upcoming Saturdays. Next week he gets to visit a salty Florida Gators team…woof.
