Jimbo Fisher set FSU on fire, Willie Taggert poured gasoline on it, and Mike Norvell proceeded to dump buckets of water on it. Three years into the Mike Norvell era, FSU appears to be rising from the ashes.
FSU is now in the 4th week of the season boasting a 3-0 record, something they haven't done since 2015. Although they haven’t had the most daunting of schedules early on, facing a week zero FCS opponent in Duquesne , followed by one of the lesser talented LSU teams in recent memory, and a one man show against Louisville, featuring great value “Lamar Jackson” in Malik Cunningham. With all that being said they earned those wins regardless of how they were won.
When you look at Mike Norvell's teams over the pass three years, they don't necessarily wow you with elite talent across the board. The word that comes to mind is grit! Moral victories are never celebrated at FSU, but if you look back over the past 5 years you saw a lack of fight, lack of discipline, and no leadership. It took a 0-4 start to ignite a culture shift and a buy in to the Norvell "CLIMB" motto.
Most will say it's just three games, but if you date back to week 5 of last year they went 5-3 in their last 8 games and 9-3 overall counting this year.
The ashes have finally withered away and the bricks are being laid again. "First you lose big. Then you lose close. Then you win close. And finally, you win big." (Bobby Bowden)
